About us

A brief description about us

The work of the currently 10 dedicated staff members in the nature park is divided into the following four focus areas and two cross-sectional tasks:

Focus Areas:

  • Education for Sustainable Development
  • Regional Marketing
  • Sustainable Tourism
  • Biodiversity

Cross-Sectional Tasks:

  • Management and Organization
  • Public Relations and Communication

Through our work in community projects, we support municipalities and other local stakeholders in regional development, educational initiatives, the preservation of cultural and natural heritage, as well as sustainable tourism. In the latter area, we also coordinate the trekking camps project, keeping nature park communities fully informed and assisting with the establishment of the camps. We handle the overall coordination of the many stakeholders involved, including tourism organizations, municipal and forestry administrations, hunters, and conservation groups.

The Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park

In the Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park – founded in 1979 and thus one of the oldest in Baden-Württemberg – near-natural forests, blooming meadows, narrow valleys, and historic sites come together. Covering an area of 1,271 km², it is located northeast of the Stuttgart metropolitan region, between Backnang and Schwäbisch Hall, Abtsgmünd and Löwenstein, as well as the Rems Valley and the Hohenlohe Plain. The park is traversed by deep river valleys with numerous historic mills, gorge-like ravines, forested heights, and small hamlets with species-rich orchards. Amidst 48 towns and municipalities with around 170,000 inhabitants, this protected landscape combines nature experiences with cultural preservation. Numerous projects in environmental education, regional marketing, recreation and sustainable tourism, as well as biodiversity and conservation, put the guiding principle into practice: to sustainably preserve the valuable cultural landscape shaped by humans.

Trekking in Baden-Württemberg
Experience Pure Nature – Right in the Heart of the Forest

Do you love traveling with a tent and backpack, away from the hustle and bustle, out in nature? Then the trekking camps in Baden-Württemberg’s nature parks are just for you. Here, you’ll find untouched landscapes, quiet forests, and narrow trails – perfect for multi-day hiking or cycling trips with overnight stays under the starry sky. And the best part: wild camping is completely legal here – at designated spots, with minimal but thoughtfully designed amenities such as compost toilets, simple seating, platforms or wood-chip-covered tent pitches, and in many camps, even a fire pit.

Trekking in the Upper Danube Nature Park
Between May and October, you can stay in five trekking camps in the Upper Danube Nature Park – right in the forest, far from villages, roads, or tourist crowds. Each camp is accessible only on foot or by bike and offers space for up to three 3-person tents with the mentioned minimal amenities.

Trekking in the Black Forest – North and South
Camping in the heart of nature is also possible in the Black Forest: In the Central/Northern Black Forest Nature Park, the Black Forest National Park, and the Southern Black Forest Nature Park, there are a total of 16 official trekking camps. All are quiet and secluded in the forest – accessible only by foot or bike. As in the Danube Valley, the sites are simple, nature-oriented, and functional. That’s all you need for your micro-adventure.

Trekking in the Odenwald Nature Park
The Neckartal-Odenwald Nature Park is one of the most beautiful hidden gems for outdoor enthusiasts in the southwest, featuring wild valleys, extensive mixed forests, and scenic heights. Since 2020, there have been four well-designed trekking camps here, available for booking between May and October.

The camps are well distributed throughout the nature park, far from villages, yet still easy to incorporate into your tour.

The nature parks of Baden-Württemberg have truly become a paradise for trekking enthusiasts. If the camps in the Black Forest or in our Swabian-Franconian Forest Nature Park are fully booked on weekends, the alternatives in the Upper Danube and the Odenwald are just as beautiful!
